As I was looking into this, I found the work of Jimmy Moore, who is one of the leading "Low-Carb" experts. His podcast, Livin' La Vida Low Carb, which has a very funny name, is actually very serious about the science of low carb and weight loss. Jimmy's current focus is something called Nutritional Ketosis.
On top of this, I have been following Mark Sisson, a leading Paleo expert. He talks a lot about being a "Fat Burner" as opposed to a "Sugar Burner". I didn't really understand what he meant by this, but when I looked into it, I found that he was also talking about using ketones in the body to facilitate weight loss.
Since I've never actually heard about this before, I was very skeptical. I decided to research further about "Ketosis" to see what it was all about. In addition to the myriad resources online, I discovered that Jimmy Moore was actually coming out with a simple guide to ketosis called Keto Clarity. This book is scheduled to come out in August of this year.
Needless to say, I was very excited to get my hands on this book, since I was just starting to get interested in the subject.
So, I went out on a limb and contacted Jimmy to ask for an advanced copy of the book for review. To my surprise, he graciously responded and affirmed that I would be on his list of bloggers to receive a free advanced copy! Last week, I finally received this in the mail...
So, over the next few weeks, I will be updating you on the process and I will be writing up a book review in time for the week of the book release. I'll leave you today with Jimmy's definition and explanation of Ketosis:
Ketosis is a metabolic state that happens when you consume a very low-carb, moderate-protein, high-fat diet that causes your body to switch from using glucose as its primary source of fuel to running on ketones. Ketones themselves are produced when the body burns fat, and they're primarily used as an alternative fuel source when glucose isn't available. In other words, your body changes from a sugar-burner to a fat-burner. -Keto Clarity p.32
