Ridiculous Food Wednesday- 5/21/14

For today's ridiculous food item, we look once again to a food that is marketed heavily to our children.  However, this food actually has a health claim to it:  "Whole Grain, First Ingredient".

You may assume that, with all of these prominent labels touting "Whole Grain", that this food is healthy or good for you.  Well, let's take a closer look...

Today's Ridiculous Food Item:  "Junk" Breakfast Cereals

Check out these three options that I found at my local supermarket.  It appears that these are advertised as healthy options for children.  What do you think?

Chocolate for Breakfast! This is every kid's dream...

It's ok, though, because they contain 12g of Whole Grain (singular)???

Reese's makes candy. right? But it still has the healthy check mark at the top of the box...
Cookie Cereal
Make the cookies smaller and put them in a bowl, and you have a healthy cereal? HUH?!
Chocolate, Reeses Candy, and Chocolate Chip Cookies.  What do all of these things have in common?  They are junk food and they are bad for you.  Yet, somehow these cereal companies have been able to transform these things into healthy breakfast options.?  Obviously, I'm very skeptical...

So, what exactly does "WHOLE GRAIN" mean??  Put simply, they used grains of CORN to hold these cereals together...that's it. What else is in these besides corn?  Here are the ingredients for cookie crisp...

Three main ingredients stick out to me... Sugar, Brown Sugar, and Corn Syrup.  What do these have in common?  These are all forms of SUGAR!

So, my take on these "Whole Grain" cereals marketed to kids??....

RIDICULOUS!

Ok, sound off...what are your thoughts on these types of products and their "healthy" labels.  Leave a comment below.  Thanks for reading!
